What This Calculator Does

This calculator uses the U.S. Navy body fat estimation method, which calculates body fat percentage from simple body circumference measurements. While not as accurate as methods like DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing, the Navy method provides a reasonable estimate that you can track over time to monitor progress.

The Formula

U.S. Navy Method: Men: BF% = 86.010 x log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 36.76 Women: BF% = 163.205 x log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 x log10(height) - 78.387 All measurements in inches.

Example Calculations

Example: Male measurement

A man with a 34-inch waist, 15-inch neck, and 70-inch height. BF% = 86.010 x log10(34-15) - 70.041 x log10(70) + 36.76 = 86.010 x 1.279 - 70.041 x 1.845 + 36.76 = 17.5% body fat (Fitness category).

Example: Female measurement

A woman with a 30-inch waist, 13-inch neck, 38-inch hips, and 65-inch height. BF% = 163.205 x log10(30+38-13) - 97.684 x log10(65) - 78.387 = 163.205 x 1.740 - 97.684 x 1.813 - 78.387 = 25.5% body fat (Fitness category).

How to Use Your Results

Track your body fat percentage monthly to monitor progress. Body fat is a better indicator of fitness than weight alone since muscle weighs more than fat. For men, 10 to 20 percent is considered healthy and fit. For women, 18 to 28 percent is the healthy fitness range. Take measurements at the same time of day for consistency, preferably in the morning before eating.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the Body Fat Percentage Calculator?

The Body Fat Percentage Calculator uses well-established scientific formulas to provide reliable estimates. The Navy method typically estimates body fat within 3 to 4 percentage points of more precise methods like DEXA scanning. For precise measurements, consult a healthcare professional or certified personal trainer.

Is the Body Fat Percentage Calculator free to use?

What formula does the Body Fat Percentage Calculator use?

The U.S. Navy body fat formula uses circumference measurements to estimate body fat percentage. For men: BF% = 86.010 x log10(waist-neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 36.76. For women, hip circumference is also included in the calculation.

How often should I recalculate my estimated body fat percentage?

We recommend recalculating every 4 to 6 weeks, or whenever your weight, activity level, or fitness goals change significantly. Regular updates ensure your targets stay aligned with your current body and lifestyle.
